2004 NEWGA Best Ball Championship

conducted at Greenwood Hills Country Club.

Thank you to Kerry  Fitzgerald and the entire staff for a great job, especially considering all the adverse weather conditions !

Championship flight

Randy Warobick and Tom Major, West Bend CC defeated the 2004 Medalists and the defending champions Mike Lewis and Jaime Loehnis, Fox Valley by a margin of 5/4.

This was the fourth NEWGA Best ball title for the team of Warobick and Major.

However the excitement of this tournament occurred in A Flight!!!

A Flight

Jeff Radder and Gene Kiela , Pine Hills def. Rick Miller and Bill Haddow  2/1, for the A Flight championship.

In the semifinals, Radder and Kiela defeated the team of Tim Kuchanek and Jon Kunz, Rhinelander CC in a record setting 30 holes!

Yes- that means they went 12 extra holes to determine the winner!!!

We are checking records to determine the magnitude of this record. To this point, we know this is a record for all WSGA and NEWGA events. If anyone has additional info on the longest sudden death match in history and anywhere, please email info to warp7777@aol.com.

The USGA sent me this email:

Dear Randy,

Wow!  12 Extra Holes!!

In the “R & A Golfer’s Handbook, 2004” there is a section on the Longest Ties, but in different categories.  I will be happy to photocopy and mail to you.  I will need your mailing address.

One story is of Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd Mangrum.  They were declared co-winners of the 1949 Motor City Open on the USPGA Tour after halving 11 sudden death holes.

In the American Open Championship at Toledo, OH, in 1931, George Von Elm and Billy Burke tied for the title.  Each returned aggregates of 292.  On the first replay both finished in 149 for 36 hole but on the second replay Burke won with a score of 148 against 149.  This is a record tie in a national open championship.  The ’31 Open is remembered almost solely for being the longest (144 holes) ever.  Soon after, the USGA went back to 18-hole playoffs.
